Monsieur Jules Elie Peony Root with 5-8 Eyes

Monsieur Jules Elie peony, a legendary 1888 French introduction that has stood as a crown jewel of both the global cut-flower industry and traditional cottage gardens for well over a century. Hybridized by the renowned Félix Crousse, this historic heirloom perennial is celebrated for its spectacular, dome-shaped double bomb-type blossoms that reach an immense 6 to 8 inches across. The massive flowers showcase a majestic mound of ruffled, light rose-pink petals that gleam with a mesmerizing silvery-gray sheen at their tips, framing a hidden layer of golden stamens deep within. Rising on vigorous, tall stems reaching up to 36 inches, this exceptionally free-flowering variety fills the mid-spring landscape with a potent, old-fashioned fragrance reminiscent of classic sweet roses. Recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit, Monsieur Jules Elie is an absolute masterpiece for floral designers and collectors seeking unrivaled vase longevity and vintage elegance.

Terms & Conditions (Checkout Agreement)

By checking out, you agree to our terms and designated shipping schedule. Once your order is confirmed, it is final, and the buyer assumes responsibility for proper root storage if the ground is frozen upon delivery. Mild weather windows across many regions allow for successful outdoor planting well into December. Because peonies benefit from winter chill, you can easily dig your planting holes ahead of time if freezing soil is a concern.

Bare Root Peony Growing Information & When to Expect Blooms

Planting Time: Plant your bare roots in the fall as soon as you receive them, before the ground freezes solid. This gives the root system time to establish over the winter.

Planting Depth: Dig a hole large enough to accommodate the roots. Position the root with the "eyes" (buds) pointing upward, 1 to 2 inches below the soil surface. Planting them too deep will prevent the plant from blooming.

Sun & Soil: Choose a location with full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily) and rich, well-draining soil. Avoid waterlogged areas to prevent rot.

When to Expect Blooms:

  • Year 1 (First Spring): The plant will focus its energy on root establishment and foliage growth. You may see a few green shoots or small leaves, but blooms are rare or may be very small.
  • Year 2: Foliage will become fuller and stronger, and you may get your first light bloom.
  • Years 3 and Beyond: The peony will reach maturity, producing its full-sized, abundant blossoms and peak performance.
