Duchesse de Nemours Peony Root with 5-8 Eyes

Duchesse de Nemours Peony, an iconic, time-tested 1856 French masterpiece that remains the global benchmark by which all other white double peonies are measured. Hybridized by Calot, this historic herbaceous classic produces majestic, globe-like double blossoms reaching 5.5 to 7 inches across. The flowers reveal a frothy center of soft canary-yellow and pale cream petals, cradled gracefully within large, pure white outer guard petals that emit an intensely potent, sweet lily-of-the-valley fragrance. Rising on sturdy, erect, and weather-resistant stems that reach up to 36 inches tall, its lush, deep green foliage provides a beautiful backdrop all through the season. Honored with the Royal Horticultural Society's prestigious Award of Garden Merit, this exceptionally dependable, profuse early-midseason bloomer is a legendary staple for upscale bridal work and commercial cut-flower growers alike.

Terms & Conditions (Checkout Agreement)

By checking out, you agree to our terms and designated shipping schedule. Once your order is confirmed, it is final, and the buyer assumes responsibility for proper root storage if the ground is frozen upon delivery. Mild weather windows across many regions allow for successful outdoor planting well into December. Because peonies benefit from winter chill, you can easily dig your planting holes ahead of time if freezing soil is a concern.

Bare Root Peony Growing Information & When to Expect Blooms

Planting Time: Plant your bare roots in the fall as soon as you receive them, before the ground freezes solid. This gives the root system time to establish over the winter.

Planting Depth: Dig a hole large enough to accommodate the roots. Position the root with the "eyes" (buds) pointing upward, 1 to 2 inches below the soil surface. Planting them too deep will prevent the plant from blooming.

Sun & Soil: Choose a location with full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily) and rich, well-draining soil. Avoid waterlogged areas to prevent rot.

When to Expect Blooms:

  • Year 1 (First Spring): The plant will focus its energy on root establishment and foliage growth. You may see a few green shoots or small leaves, but blooms are rare or may be very small.
  • Year 2: Foliage will become fuller and stronger, and you may get your first light bloom.
  • Years 3 and Beyond: The peony will reach maturity, producing its full-sized, abundant blossoms and peak performance.
